Shenzhen, average age 32.5: People's Daily on the city's rise — and why it matters to a Shenzhen–Hong Kong supplier
People's Daily recently ran a feature on Shenzhen, a city whose residents have an average age of just 32.5. Its nickname "Pengcheng" goes back to 1394, when the Dapeng garrison fort was set up on this coast. According to the article, the resident population grew from 314,000 in 1979 to 18.25 million in 2025, and GDP rose from RMB 270 million in 1980 to RMB 3,873.18 billion in 2025. Shenzhen is described as China's No. 1 city for industry and for foreign trade, and the country's third-largest city economy; foreign trade grew from USD 18 million in 1980 to RMB 4.55 trillion in 2025.
The feature also points to the city's sea and logistics base: more than 260 km of coastline, over 110,000 marine-related companies, and more than 40,000 TEU leaving Shenzhen Port every day. Just before the APEC leaders' meeting held in Shenzhen on October 12, the upgraded Huanggang Port reopened after a seven-year rebuild, with self-service clearance in about 30 seconds and a "one location, two inspections" arrangement with Hong Kong.
On innovation, the article cites 26,000 national high-tech enterprises, with more than 90% of R&D institutions, staff and funding inside companies. Shenzhen's R&D intensity reached 6.67% in 2024, the highest among Chinese cities, and the Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou cluster again ranked first globally on WIPO's 2026 list.
Why this matters for us: Shenzhen Yixin Intelligent Manufacturing Electronics Co., Ltd. (YIXIN ELECTRONIC) works inside this ecosystem every day. We source and supply electronic components from Shenzhen, close to the Huaqiangbei electronics market and the city's manufacturing supply chain, and ship to overseas customers via Hong Kong. Faster Shenzhen–Hong Kong clearance and a dense port network help shorten lead times on export orders. YIXIN is also building a warehouse and production workshop of about 10,000 m² on family land.
